According to associate scientist at the Schulich Heart Research Program, Dr. Sheldon Tobe, yoga can do just that.

"It makes people more aware and mindful," he says. "Lowering our blood pressure usually takes medicine to make our muscles relax more, but lifestyle changes can also lower our blood pressure—whether it's meditation, exercise, or yoga—it works."

Dr. Tobe believes that rather than focussing on stress reduction, individuals should train their bodies to manage stress more effectively so that the parasympathetic nervous system can repair the body. Through meditation, our bodies and minds are given time to rejuvenate from daily stressors.

Fitness enthusiasts and adventure-seekers alike are constantly searching for new and innovative ways to stay active. But is it possible that these activities can also decrease stress levels?

But just because it's meditation doesn't mean it has to be boring. Let's take a look at three emerging styles of yoga in the Hamilton and Halton, Ontario regions and find out what makes them so fun and unique!
